An EPPO programme for translations of international phytosanitary documents into the Russian language.

Russian and Ukrainian representatives raised the question of the role of the Russian language at a meeting of the Executive Committee of EPPO during 2002-03. The Russian language has a special status in EPPO, but it is not an official language (such as English and French). The number of Russian-speaking countries in the EPPO exceeds the number of those speaking French and approaches the number of those whose specialists prefer the use of Russian and French to English. Of the countries of the former USSR, Russia, the Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Kazakhstan have already joined the EPPO. The remaining countries of the former USSR have been invited by the Council and are willing to join the EPPO, with the Republic of Georgia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan being the first on the list. The Secretariat has started work for making Russian an official language of the EPPO. An agreement between the EPPO and the Protection and Quarantine of Plants journal was reached in 1997 on publication of some materials in Russian. Information is presented on international phytosanitary documents of the EPPO and FAO which have already been translated or are being translated into Russian.
