Glued engineered wood composites are a growing family of renewable structural materials used in residential, commercial and industrial construction. They include traditional sheathing materials such as plywood and oriented strand board, as well as prefabricated wood I-joists, beam and girder materials such as I-joists, Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), Structural Composite Lumbers (SCL) and glued-laminated timber (glulam). Because of their versatility, light weight, ease of use, consistent properties and wide range of capabilities, the use of these materials has grown in the North American marketplace at rates that exceed those of traditional lumber. In some cases, they have successfully competed with steel.
