The Workforce in 2010

When I decided on my column topic—the workforce in 2010—I realized how much has transpired in the industry since 1910. First, I wasn't even around. My mother (who is still self-sufficient and living by herself) was one year old, and what she's seen and experienced in her lifetime is mind-boggling. The other day we were discussing her upcoming eye surgery, and she skillfully changed the subject by asking me, "Well, how's business doing? Isn't the price of food terrible?" When I responded with a quick dissertation on economics and the looming recession, she said, "You should be glad you didn't go through the Depression." All things in perspective, I guess!
