CC Technologies, Dublin, OH, recently concluded a two-year study for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and NACE International, a professional society dedicated to corrosion issues. The study indicates that the effects of corrosion cost the United States 276 billion US dollars (in 1998) a year - representing 3.1 percent of the nation's gross domestic product. The study calculated the costs attributed to corrosion prevention, maintenance, and repair for the following industries: utilities, transportation, production and manufacturing, government, and infrastructure. These figures were then extrapolated to the entire U.S. economy, arriving at a total direct cost to the US economy due to corrosion of a little over three percent of the US annual domestic product.
