This paper investigates the Rake path diversity effect of a coherent adaptive antenna array diversity (CAAAD) receiver employing receiver antenna-weight generation algorithm that is common to all paths for Rake combining based on laboratory experiments using multipath fading simulators. The experimental results elucidate that as the number of paths is increased from L = 1 to 2 and 4, the required transmit E{sub}b/N{sub}0 for the average block error rate (BLER) of 10{sup}(-2) is decreased by approximately 1.3 (0.5) dB and 1.8 (1.0) dB, respectively, with 8 (12) antennas owing to the increasing Rake path diversity effect (3-user environment, the ratio of the target E{sub}b/I{sub}0 of the desired to that of the interfering users is △E{sub}b/I{sub}0 = - 12 dB). We also clarify that when the angle spread among paths is α = +1/-5 degrees for L = 2 and 4, the improvement in the required average transmit E{sub}b/N{sub}0 by increasing the number of antennas beyond 10 is small.
