Melanocytic nevi are a frequent finding in dermato-logic examinations, with as many as 80% to 100% of the general white population having at least 1 pig-mented lesion. Nevi can be congenital or acquired. Most nevi are small, symmetric, and homogenous in color; however, some nevi have certain clinical and histologic features in common with melanoma. The latter lesions have been referred to as dysplastic nevi. Biopsy-proven dysplastic nevi have a prevalence rate of approximately 2% to 20% in the adult white population, with the pediatric population having a prevalence rate of approximately 1.5%.
