Brazil’s Usiminas plans to restart Cubatao BF just in few years

Brazil’s largest steelmaker Usiminas is not planning to reactivate the blast furnace No.1 at its Cubatao plant (SaoPaulo state) in the near term.The shutdown of the primary activity of Usiminas’s Cubatao unit which was temporarily paralysed in 2015 amid lowerdemand for flat steel in the Brazilian market, will be at least five years, local media reports citing Sergio Leite, UsiminasCEO. According to him, the resumption may depend on a greater speed of economic activity in Brazil, but “he doesnot see this decision being taken before 2020.” At this moment, Usiminas is focused on the return of one of the blastfurnaces in its unit in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais state.
