We investigated the effect of Zn-Al hot-dip galvanizing on the H embrittlement of twinning-induced plasticity steels with and without Al. Both hot-dip galvanized specimens had coating layers consisting of the Al-bearing eta-Zn layer and the Fe-Al inhibition layer. Zn-Al hot-dip galvanizing and additional H-charging hardly reduced the elongation. These results are closely related to crack propagation. The H desorption energy values of the matrix, the eta-Zn layer, and the inhibition layer were 34.7, 52.6, and 60.8 kJ mol(-1), respectively. The inhibition layer revealed the strongest H trapping ability and the highest H concentration. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
