US President Donald Trump is likely to declare Iran non-compliant with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in regards to the Iranian nuclear program ahead of an Oct. 15 re-certification deadline. The decision to label Iran non-compliant with the JCPOA does not mean US sanctions against Iran's oil sector would be reinstated automatically, but Trump could issue an executive order that would re-impose sanctions. The US Congress could also consider legislation to place sanctions back on the Iranian oil sector should Trump choose not to do so. Western sanctions reduced Iranian crude exports by over 1.0MM b/d for several months as countries negotiated over its nuclear program. Since sanctions were lifted in 2015 Iranian crude production has climbed back to 3.83MM b/d as of Aug.
