Jason Kenney,leader of die United Conservative Party,defeated incumbent Rachel Notiey of the center-left New Dem-ocratic Party on April 16 to become the new Premier of Alberta.Kenney campaigned on fighting harder for die oilsands industry,stating he intends to get stalled pipelines built by intervening in all National Energy Board hearings that affect Alberta oil and gas interests.Kenney also promised to scrap the province's carbon tax,accelerate oil and gas well approvals by reforming the Alberta Energy Regulator,create a legal guarantee that the royalty regime in place when a well is approved remains in place for die life of the project,and create a “war room” to hit back at anti-oilsands campaigners.He also pledged to cut corporate taxes and to balance the province's books in his first term.
