Proposal to privatize fuel imports in Venezuela

Members of the country's Oil Chamber have been in discussions with state-owned PDVSA and officials with President Nicolas Maduro's government,proposing that private companies be allowea to import and distribute gasoline.However,the proposal will face many challenges,including subsidies that essentially make gasoline at pumps free and the 2008 law reserving liquid fuel supply to the government.A source familiar with the talks said,”[the proposal] is necessary,but it is not viable.”On the other hand,the governor ot Carabobo,Rafael Lacava,who is aligned with Maduro,said,”It will take some time.But I am sure that sooner rather than later,we will be normalizing the fuel market on the streets.”
