Bureau Veritas rep gives notes and pointers on IMO-2020-compliant fuel

Charlotte Rojgaard,Global Head of Marine Fuel Services at Bureau Veritas stated in an interview with S&P Global Platts that VLSFO has shown higher variation in viscosity compared to 3.5%-sulfur RMG 380 fuels that were produced prior to the IMO's 0.5%-sulfur limit.Additionally,new VLSFO grades have been found to be more paraffinic and to have greater variability in properties across different regions.Bureau Veritas also found that VLSFO blends to have average viscosities of 112.5 cst in Jan.and Feb.,compared to an average viscosity of 337.9 est found for HSFO during the same two-month period in 2019.Meanwhile,a research note from Senior Research Analyst Anton Shamray of Inegt8 highlighted regional differences in viscosity drops,”For example,viscosity in ARA dropped 30 cst by March to 100 cst and there was a bigger decrease in Singapore,from 170 cst down to 90 cst,with an even bigger reduction in Malta,from 150 cst to 50 cst.”As a result,it is important to separate different blends.
