JFE Steel Research Lab Spearheads 'Intelligent' Steel Works Initiative

JFE Steel Corporation ("JFE Steel") has started deploying data science technology to convert its blast furnaces in Japan to cyber-physical systems (CPS). This is part of its grand initiative to transform its steel works into "Intelligent Steel Works" within ten years, into steel works capable of self-learning and autonomously optimising operation. According to the company, the conversion "involves using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse sensor data collected from the physical manufacturing process and then create a virtual (cyber) process in digital space using proprietary techniques, after which the two processes are linked in real time."
