Rescue Efforts Underway in Mauritius to Contain Growing Oil Spill

Tokyo-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (“MOL”) issued an update on 7th regarding the grounding of the vessel off the east coast of the island of Mauritius. The 203,130-DWT bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef off the Indian Ocean island on its way to Brazil from China via Singapore at approximately 19:25, local time, 25th July, and has since 6th August begun leaking a large amount of fuel into the surrounding waters. Wakashio was time chartered to MOL from Okiyo Maritime, an affiliated company of the vessel’s owner Nagashiki Shipping Co. Ltd. (“Nagashiki”).
