Mark Vanderpump and colleagues' finding of iodine deficiency in the UK (June 11, p 2007) is a reminder that iodine deficiency is not confined to low-income nations. Parallels are obvious to Australia and New Zealand, where national surveys confirmed the re-emergence of a problem, and to the USA, where the dietary iodine supply has fallen to marginal levels in vulnerable groups. Vanderpump and colleagues recommend a more comprehensive investigation and urge evidence-based prophylaxis.
