One morning in late January, TV viewers in Peru saw a popular entertainer being hustled off to jail several months after he had seriously injured a pedestrian while driving under the influence of alcohol. The high-profile case came amid a string of pedestrian accidents, including a child struck and killed by a motorised tricycle while playing outside her house in a low-income neighbourhood with no pavements, and a public-transport van that jumped a curb and plowed into a group of commuters at a bus stop. Such sensational cases usually vanish from the headlines in a day or two whereas traffic accidents continue to kill on a daily basis.
