Although much of Professor Michael Neuberger's research now underpins the achievements of sections of the biotechnology industry, an urge to see the work applied in this way was not his principal motivation. "He knew that biotechnology was important", says Sir Gregory Winter, a some time Deputy Director of the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) and now Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, "but he didn't really want to get involved with it after he'd proved an intellectual principle to his satisfaction".
