Jean William Pape is used to dealing with catastrophes. When he spoke to The Lancet recently from the offices of the clinic and refugee camp he is presiding over in Haiti, he described the flooded football field outside of his window where his organisation set up a field hospital and facilities for 7000 refugees in the immediate aftermath of the January earthquake. On one side of the field are sanitary facilities, on the other, water and food. He is now trying to raise money to create an onsite treatment centre for drug-resistant tuberculosis and a model village to relocate the refugees. He has already set up a primary school, and wants to build a vocational school so that adults can learn trades to begin rebuilding their communities.
