We monitored whole-body cooling concurrently by both esophageal and recta! probes. Esophageal temperature was significantly higher compared with simultaneous rectal temperature during cooling, with a temperature gradient ranging from 0.46 to 1.03degC (median, 0.8degC; IQR, 0.6-0.8degC). During rewarming, this temperature difference disappeared .
