Therapeutic Management of Babesiosis in a Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)

A male captive tiger aged 10 years had a complaint of head pressing, anorexia, lethargy and reluctance to move, staggering gait and reduced activity in its enclosure. The animal was forced into the squeeze cage and physically restrained. A general clinical examination was done. The peripheral blood smear, whole bloodand serum were collected. Haematology and serum biochemistry was done. A corneal swab was taken from the eyes. The wet film and blood smear showed no evidence of haemoprotozoans and the haematological and serum biochemical parameters were well within thenormal range. Although wet film was negative PCR revealed positive for Babesia sp. The animal was treated with imidocarb at a dosage of 1.1 mg/kg bwt and the animal had an uneventful recovery.
