The explosion of ammonium nitrate at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, on 4 August was one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in history, according to Sheffield University's Blast and Impact Engineering Research Group. The analysis was performed by analysing 16 videos and tracking the Shockwave. It showed that the explosion was equivalent to of TNT, equivalent to 1/20th the size of the Hiroshima bomb. In a few milliseconds, it released 1GWh of energy, the equivalent of the hourly rate of 3m solar panels or 400 wind turbines. The explosion killed around people and injured around 6000.
