A one-pot reaction of the zwitterion formed from an isocyanide and an acetylenedicarboxylate with different five-membered rings containing both an acidic proton and a suitable nucleophile resulted in the preparation of novel 5-membered ring fused pyrimidine derivatives in yields ranging from 18 to 87%.
