In a market with declining coal prices, the old saw that the low-cost producers will come out on top is usually right. Until it isn’t. While prices have been backing up for the better part of the year the lower-cost coal definitely has an advantage, but that doesn’t mean it has every advantage. With there being a lot of calls for production to be “rationalized,” when it comes to the thermal markets, not every higher-cost mine is going to be the ones that go … if any go.
