Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf shuts down state’s coal mining industry

In a stunning move, the governor of Pennsylvania, as part of a more general business closure order, shut down for an indefinite period the state’s large thermal and metallurgical coal mining industry. Pennsylvania is the U.S.’s third most-prolific coalmining state. Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, ordered the closure as a response to Covid-19 and during a time of national emergency. The order could portend similar measures within the U.S. and in other global mining regions.
