US January exports total 8.4 million mt, highest January exports since 2013: Census data

US coal exports totaled over 8.4 million mt in January, up 4.1% from December and up 5.8% from the year-ago month, US Census data showed Wednesday. This was the highest number of January exports since 2013 with almost 8.7 million mt, and the highest ratio of thermal to met exports in the month of January since S&P Global Platts data began in 2012. Thermal exports were 48.4% compared with met exports making of 51.6%. The top three destinations in January were India, with 1.4 million mt imported, Netherlands, at almost 1.3 million mt, and Japan, at 942,983 mt, compared with last year’s top three January importers: India at 1.5 million, Japan, at 851,786 mt, and South Korea, at 831,705 mt.
