Indian buyers turn to South African thermal coal amid tight petcoke supply

Indian demand for US petcoke is tapering off as seaborne buyers turn to South African thermal coal as an alternative, market sources said Wednesday. A western India-based trader said availabilities for both Indian domestic and seaborne US petcoke are tight, leaving buyers with the option to switch to thermal coal when prices are in the market's favor. He heard offers for South African 5,500 kcal/kg NAR coal at $62- $63/mt FOB Richards Bay, and added that it's cheaper than US 7,500 kcal/kg NAR petcoke.
