Vattenfall starts Berlin gas plant as hamburg coal decision looms

London—Vattenfall has started a new gas-fired heat and power plant in the Marzahn area of Berlin, the Swedish utility said June 3. The 260 MWe, 230 MWth unit is the third cogeneration gas plant the utility has opened in the German capital in recent years as it proceeds to phase-out coal-fired facilities. “Vattenfall has invested more than Eur300 million [$336 million] in the Marzahn plant and a total of around Eur1 billion in the past 10 years to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our district heating, district cooling and electricity production in Berlin,” Vattenfall’s head of heat in Berlin Tanja Wielgoss said.
