Seoul—South Korea will shut up to 28 coal-fired power plants in March, or nearly half of its 60 coal-fired power plants, to help reduce air pollution, a move that could potentially boost LNG demand, the energy ministry and officials said Monday. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said in a statement that 21 to 28 coal-fired power plants would be closed from March 1 to March 31 in an effort to reduce emissions of fine dust. While the exact scope of the coal-fired power plants’ shutdown would be determined on the basis of electricity demand during the period, the country would be ready to raise operating ratio of natural gas-fired power plants to avoid any supply disruptions, a ministry official said.
