Atlantic, NE Asia thermal coal still below nearly 18-year low price for Dated Brent crude

London—CIF Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp and delivered-Northeast Asian thermal coal on an $/MMBtu basis remains cheaper than oil, even with the collapse of Dated Brent crude oil over the past month. Price volatility for coal has been less frequent compared with the erratic pricing environment in the global oil market, due to the former’s overall lack of liquidity, making coal an inexpensive, more stable fuel source for buyers. This follows on from the already historic lows for Atlantic thermal coal prices in recent months, which according to S&P Global Platts Analytics has seen delivered coal prices “below the marginal cost of supply.”
