Pioneer CEO sees oil demand returning to pre-pandemic level by 2022, early 2023

New York—Crude oil demand should rebound to 100 million b/d by late 2022 or early 2023, Pioneer Natural Resources CEO Scott Sheffield said Dec. 1 Speaking at the Reuters Future of Oil & Gas 2020 conference, Sheffield said the rapid development of a COVID-19 vaccine has made him increasingly optimistic oil demand will rebound fairly quickly. In spite of a 9 million b/d decline in demand this year, the CEO said he anticipates demand will bounce back to approximately 97 million b/d in 2021 and continue to climb.
