The lubricating oil circuit (11) of an internal combustion engine, includes an oil supply tank (18) from which oil into the oil sump (8) is controllable by a control valve which is formed as a float valve (20) which is directly controlled by the oil level (21). At least one return line (16,17) is provided for the return of lubricating oil from the lubrication points (9,10) to the oil supply tank and also to the oil sump. The float valve is immersed in a splash baffle (24) which is installed inside the oil sump. An independent claim is included for a method for the control of the lubricating oil volume in a lubricating oil circuit between an oil supply tank and the oil sump of an internal combustion engine.
