Production resumes at Contura Energy’s Virginia coal mines: state official

Houston—Contura Energy’s four Virginia coal mines have reopened and are back to work after a near three-week shutdown, due to the coranvirus pandemic, according to a spokeswoman from the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. DMME spokeswoman Tarah Kesterson said in an email to S&P Global Platts Wednesday that the mines, which are all located in Dickenson County, Virginia, were reopened Monday. On April 3, Contura, the largest producer in Central Appalachia, said it was idling the majority of its operations for approximately 30 days with some sites idling for shorter periods of time and a few continuing to operate at a near-normal rate.
