Iron ore producer LKAB halts Kiruna mine after earthquake

London—Swedish miner LKAB said Tuesday it has stopped mining at its biggest complex in Kiruna to conduct checks after a Magnitude 4.9 earthquake Monday in the mine damaged water supplies and roads. LKAB reported no injuries after the quake hit at 3:11 local time, while an intensive inspection of the underground mine is underway, LKAB said. As of Tuesday, 300 people were underground and engaged in inspections with 13 people working underground at the time and evacuated, the Lulea-based company said in a statement. Rock technicians are informing mine supervisors as to which areas are safe to enter, it said.
