Vale in initial planning for Serra Sul iron ore, rail boost

Brazilian miner Vale is in the initial stages of planning the construction of a 400-km stretchof railway and a port that would allow iron ore production to grow at its Serra Sul iron oremine site in northern Brazil's Para state, the company said Thursday.The line will connect the existing Carajas railroad and a potential port at Vila do Conde inBarcarena, Para, according to a presentation made by Vale to investors. The new portwould encourage development of the region and avoid congestion at the existing Ponta daMadeira port in northeastern Brazil's Maranhao state, which is currently used for theshipping of Carajas ore.
