Gas Demand Growth Tempered by Uncertainties

While global natural gas demand is undergoing robust growth, the industry should temper its lofty expectations amid a host of market uncertainties, officials and analysts said Tuesday. Speaking at the Oil & Money conference in London, co-hosted by Energy Intelligence and the New York Times, Peter Hagen, general commercial manager for Chevron Australia, said gas’ abundance, combined with its propensity to replace coal in some of the world’s largest markets, means the current gas glut will be worked off fairly quickly. Hagen said gas will make up the lion’s share of the energy mix in many developing countries, which are being targeted by portfolio LNG players in the next wave of liquefaction capacity.
