Watchdog advocates are increasingly riled about the downward spiral they say the Trump administration is on with financial transparency policies aimed at holding oil companies accountable. "The United States was once the leader in creating a more open and accountable oil, gas and mining sector,” Publish What You Pay Director Jana Morgan said recently. Morgan said the US is now lagging behind international efforts as “our allies in the European Union, Norway, UK and Canada are all implementing laws” spearheaded by the US. Their latest concerns stem from a recent bid by the US Department of the Treasury for congressional repeal of transparency requirements set in the 2010 Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Act and from the US’ shaky status in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) (OD Mar.21’17).
