Production curtailments put in place by the government of Alberta had a mixed impact on the province’s largest oil companies, as higher prices and narrowing differentials helped those focused on the upstream but hurt downstream results. The first quarter of 2019 was the first test of Alberta’s controversial attempt to narrow the price differential between benchmark Western Canadian Select (WCS) and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and try to drain swelling inventories.
