South Africa’s power utility Eskom will no longer require coal suppliers to be majority black-owned companies, putting an end to an unpopular policy that led international trading houses to divest from the sector. Eskom Chief Operating Officer Jan Oberholzer told IHS Markit the power monopoly would drop its requirement that all coal suppliers be more than 50% black owned. The policy is strongly opposed by major coal companies, pushing firms like Anglo American and South32 to sell their Eskom-tied mines.
