India’s Supreme Court has rolled back plans to tighten oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission limits by thermal power plants, in a move that could save the industry nearly $2bn in upgrade costs. The Court ruled against plans to tighten NOx emissions to 300 mg/Nm3 (milligrams per cubic metre at standard pressure and temperature) for power plants built between 2004-2016, by 2022 and subsequently to 100 mg/Nm3. Instead, levels will remain at 450 mg/Nm3, according to a court order.
