India adopts premarket testing for U.S. imported shrimp in response to FDA

The Southern Shrimp Alliance is praising FDA for pushing India to adopt a premarket testing program for farm-raised shrimp in response to the high levels of banned antibiotics found in products shipped to the United States. But the trade association wants to know why shipments are continuing from a company that is the subject of two import alerts. In a May 24 letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, SSA Executive Director John Williams says his review of import data shows a 300% increase in shipments of shrimp by an Indian company that appears to be operating under two names -- GVR Exoorts Pvt. Ltd and Sazar Grandhi Exports Ltd. -- and subject to two import alerts.
