No bids at first La Oroya smelter auction

No company placed any bids in the first auction for Peru’s La Oroya smelter and the nearby Cobriza copper mine March 10, Reuters reported. The minimum price for the assets will be cut 15% from around $270 million in the second auction on March 21, with another 15% cut if a third and final auction is needed on March 30, according to Pablo Peschiera, director of consulting firm Dirige, which is managing the liquidation. Peschiera suggested that interested parties were likely waiting for the results of new air quality standards the environment ministry will release on March 17, as these could reduce necessary upgrade costs.
