Transition index cuts days open on dairy unit

Choosing bulls for their transitioning ability is playing a valuable role in transition cow management on a year-round calving dairy. Michael Priestley reports.Two years of selecting genomic bulls on a 5-star transition index has shown each star rating on the Genus ABS TransitionRight index is saving 4.8 days open.This means a 5-star bull (where 5 is best and 1 is worst) will have daughters in calf almost 20 days sooner than a 1-star bull at Cotton Abbotts, Chester, with the herd using a 4.4-star sire across heifers on average.
