Senators could force military to buy nuclear power in name of national security

A new bipartisan bill to save the failing US nuclear energy industry would commit the federal government to sign long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with atomic generators even if this means paying above market rates - potentially to the detriment of cheaper gas-fired producers. The Nuclear Energy Leadership Act, tabled by a bipartisan group of nine US senators, would oblige the energy secretary to sign at least one 40-year PPA with a commercial reactor by end- 2023.
