PG&E bankruptcy threatens California’s bid to swap gas power plants with batteries

California’s ambitions to replace three ageing natural gas-fired power generators with utility-scale battery systems have come under threat from the bankruptcy of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). At least two companies contracted to provide energy storage solutions to PG&E are seeking legal protections to avoid expending millions of dollars on equipment that the utility subsequently decides it does not need.
