Snam hitches wagons with Hitachi to convert diesel trains to run on LNG in Italy

Snam has joined forces with Hitachi Rail and Italian state-owned rail company FS Italiane for a pilot project that will see diesel trains converted to run on LNG or compressed natural gas (CNG). The initial aim of the project is to convert “one or two” diesel-powered Fondazione FS Italiane railcars to run on the cleaner burning fuel, which Snam said would “virtually eliminate particulate matter and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 20%”.
