LS Power launches world’s largest battery in bid to ease California’s power problems

US power producer LS Power has unveiled the world’s largest battery, the 250 MW Gateway energy storage project in San Diego County, California, in the wake of three days of utility consumer conservation efforts across the state aimed at avoiding blackouts during a prolonged heatwave. Separately, Capital Dynamics and Tenaska announced they will develop 2 GW of battery energy storage in California to help “help integrate” variable-output renewables, which have been blamed in some quarters for the power outages.
