China Sets 2020 Gas Output Target

China’s State Council has set a new domestic gas output goal to boost consumption, targeting at least 200 Bcm/yr (19.34 Bcf/d) by 2020 from conventional and unconventional gas sources, up from 148 Bcm in 2017. The target is in line with President Xi Jinping’s ambition to raise domestic oil and gas output and rely less on imports in the interests of national energy security. This has taken on greater significance amid current trade war tensions with the US.
