Fire Hits Key Formosa Refining Unit

Taiwan’s Formosa has been hit by a fire that caused serious damage to an important secondary unit, forcing its 540,000 b/d Mailiao refinery to run lower for the foreseeable future. Formosa’s No. 2 80,000 b/d residue desulfurizer (RDS) caught fire Wednesday morning, a repeat of two fires that hit the same unit nearly a decade ago, Energy Intelligence understands. This is likely to force the Mailiao refinery to trim back on runs, at least temporarily, due to the key role that the RDS plays in producing gasoline.
