Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia has stepped up austerity measures dramatically as it battles the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic and low oil prices. Under the plans, the Middle East’s biggest economy will triple its value-added tax (VAT) rate to 15% and suspend the cost of living allowances for state workers in the face of intense pressure on its budget because of sustained low oil prices, the kingdom’s finance minister announced Monday.
