A signifcant number of Ukrainians are expected to register their disillusionment with the country’s fractious politics by voting for a supposed outsider candidate in the country’s 31 March presidential elections. The leader in the opinion polls is actor and comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who declared his candidacy only on 31 December, but now has a support rating of around 28pc. Trailing him are incumbent President Petro Poroshenko and former prime minister Yulia Timoshenko, both at around 16pc. If none of the candidates secure 50pc of the vote, the top two will face each other in a run-of vote on 21 April. The polls suggest that Zelenskiy could beat either of his nearest rivals.
